About the Ombudsman


The Ombudsman has been appointed by the Queen, on recommendation of the Lord Chancellor, for an initial five year term which expires on 24 September 2011. 

Mr Karamjit Singh CBE took office on 25 September 2006. His earlier career has covered academia, the voluntary sector and local government. His substantive public appointments include the Electoral Commission where in addition to his United Kingdom wide role he retains a special interest in Northern Ireland issues. He also chairs an NHS Trust in the West Midlands and serves as a non legally qualified member of the QC selection panel for England and Wales. 

Mr Singh’s previous public appointments in England and Wales covered such areas as miscarriages of justice, parole, investigation of complaints against the police, judicial training and the selection of senior civil servants.

His voluntary interests include being a Trustee of the British Lung Foundation. He has previously been a Trustee of the Citizenship Foundation and the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales. During 1990-1991 he was awarded a Harkness Fellowship and spent twelve months in the United States with a focus on the interaction between urban institutions and their local communities.
